The family name is derived from the Zi surname, which is a descendant of Bi Gan, a famous minister in the late Shang Dynasty, and is a family name given by the king. At the end of the Shang Dynasty, King Zhou was ruthless, and Bi Gan was killed for criticizing him. Bigan's wife, Chen, fled to the Changlin Mountains and gave birth to a son, Quan. After the Zhou Dynasty destroyed the Shang Dynasty, because Quan was born in the forest and his father, Bi Gan, was steadfast and unyielding, he was given the surname Lin by King Wu of the Zhou Dynasty.

[Origin and Sources] A nobleman of the Shang Dynasty, Bi Gan (Zi surname), risked his life to give advice to King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty and was killed by disemboweling and digging out his heart. His wife, Chen, was pregnant and fled to the Makino Changlin Stone Chamber (a stone cave in the dense forests in the mountains southwest of present-day Qi County of Henan Province and northwest of Weihui) and gave birth to a boy named Jian. After King Wu of Zhou destroyed Shang, he met Jian and gave him the surname Lin because he lived in Changlin. East Zhou (are now Henan Luoyang) in the early period, the Zhou Ping Wang Ji Yisu have concubine son (concubine born son) named Lin Kai, Lin Kai's children and grandchildren of some of the ancestral name for the family name, also known as the Lin clan. In addition, the Xianbei tribe originally Qulin clan, with the Northern Wei Dynasty Emperor Xiaowen moved to Luoyang, changed to the Lin clan.
